Hand and Arm Pain is often caused by excessive computer use, tennis, golf, or other repetitive hand and arm activities, as well as traumatic injuries, shoulder issues, repetitive movements, overstretching, muscle strains, nerve compression, or medical conditions.  Since hands are used daily, inflammation and pain can develop over time. These pain-related issues can cause your fascia to resemble a spider web—when it tightens and constricts due to chronic pain or stress, you may experience pain in your thumbs, wrist, elbow, and shoulder as well.
Thumb and Hand Pain: Gamer’s Thumb, also known as de Quervain’s Tenosynovitis, involves inflammation of the tendons in the thumb and wrist, often caused by injury or overuse. Those involved in racket sports, gaming, gardening, or repetitive tasks are more prone to it, and it may also be linked to rheumatoid arthritis. Women, especially after pregnancy, and older individuals are at higher risk. Symptoms include pain in the back and base of the thumb, or on the side of the wrist—pain may develop gradually or suddenly and worsen with movement.
Finger and Hand Pain: Carpal Tunnel Syndrome occurs when pressure compresses the median nerve, which controls thumb and finger movement (except the pinky). Swelling narrows the carpal tunnel, often due to repetitive activities like typing, or conditions like hyperthyroidism, diabetes, obesity, or pregnancy. Symptoms include burning, tingling, or numbness in the palm, thumb, and fingers (excluding the pinky). If untreated, muscle damage may occur, leading to loss of function. Women and certain occupations, such as assembly line workers, cashiers, sewers, hair stylists, and bakers, are at higher risk.  Trigger Finger involves the catching or locking of the thumb or fingers during movement, caused by irritation and swelling of the tendon sheath. It may also cause stiffness or soreness, and the finger may become locked and unable to straighten. Repetitive or forceful finger and thumb movements increase risk. Women, farmers, and musicians are more susceptible.
Elbow and Arm Pain: Tennis Elbow and Golfer’s Elbow: Both conditions can cause elbow pain and are common in athletes, though they can affect anyone. Repetitive overuse of the elbow may lead to tendinitis, which manifests as tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis)—inflammation of the tendons on the outside of the elbow—and golfer’s elbow (medial epicondylitis)—inflammation of the tendons on the inside. Tennis Elbow is more prevalent. Activities involving frequent flexing, gripping, or swinging increase the risk, as do hobbies such as knitting, painting, or typing. Golfer’s Elbow is common among tennis, baseball, and bowling players, as well as those who use tools. Treatment options include elbow straps, icing, and range-of-motion exercises to improve flexibility.
No Matter What Kind Of Pain You're Experiencing, it's always wise to check in with your physician to make sure there's nothing medical going on. If your doctor gives you a clean bill of health, then a soothing massage might be just what you need to ease your pain and boost your flexibility.
